Parables of the Kingdom

By their nature, Jesus’ parables are open to misinterpretation. Jesus himself observed that their meaning would be hidden from many. The trouble with the parables is that we can read our own ideas into them, making them mean whatever we choose.

How do we guard against this? An important principle in interpreting all scripture, including the parables, is that we are different from the original audience. Jesus was speaking to first-century Jews, not 21st-century Westerners, and their understanding, their questions and their concerns were vastly different from our own.
