Sofia Carlbert

June 2005

From the forests of southern Sweden, Sofia was first heard at Salt in November 2004, jamming with Paul P on a jazz standard and a Pearl Jam tune. During her 10 month stay in Bristol, she sang at Salt on 4 or 5 occasions; here, from June 2005 with Paul on guitar, is "My Baby Just Cares For Me".

Sofia says that technically this wasn't one of her best performances.  But no-one who has seen her sing at the cafe would forget the way she could captivate an audience and bring the words to life.

Paul Papenfus

June 2005

"Toemaar Die Donker Man". For a bit of variety, Paul played us this charming, catchy tune in Afrikaans. The lyrics were written by South African poet Ingrid Jonker and they were set to music by a well-known South African artist called Laurika Rauch. The song is a lullaby written by the poet for her young daughter.  Homework is to learn the words...

'The Bedminster Hillbillies'

April 2005

The Bedminster Hillbillies - Salt Open MicI should explain the name... this line-up is three-quarters of the band Telegram, with Dan Monks on vocals/guitar, Jon Slattery on bass, and drummer Nick converted to violinist for the evening -- hence the nickname volunteered from the crowd by Telegram's other memeber, guitarist Simon Paver. They are playing one of their acoustic-only songs called 'Telling Everyone'.

Marcos Sullivan

April 2005

Marcos Sullivan - Salt Open Mic At last we know Marcos' surname ;-). On each Salt appearance he has shown a different facet of his songwriting style, and he had the April crowd amused with a few of his more tongue in cheek numbers.

Dino Dini

March 2005

Dino Dini - Salt Open Mic Dino shows there are many ways to reflect wistfulness and incomplete emotions in music, not all of which have yet been discovered. This song was inspired by the title of the book 'I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings'.

Jon Rees

Jon Rees - Salt Open MicJon said, ‘I'm only gonna do one more, because my voice is really shaky, and it's embarrassing'… but he still had everybody's ears all tuned in to this … not so embarrassing after all eh Jon!...

TyTe + Edi Johnston

So we met these guys on the night (April), both well known it turns out - Edi from the band Psalmistry and Tyte from the international beatbox community. This is them getting started with their double-act of improvised rhyming and vocal percussion…

TyTe TyTe - Salt Open MicI have just been listening to some other pro beatboxing to compare, and I think this skit from TyTe is right up there – check out the vocal scratch / echo effects…? Unbelievable!
Dan Monks Dan Monks - Salt Open MicMr Monks and his bass-playing/backing-singer accomplice Mr John Slattery, on leave from their new project, delivering a gorgeous new song. If you have not heard Dan's bittersweet, melodic style before, this would be a great place to start.

'Beira do Mar' - Pepe Barcellos
'Eu Vou Cantar'

Pepe Barcellos - Salt Open MicPepe is a singer /guitarist from Rio de Janeiro , who had been in the country all of 2 weeks when he popped up at Salt in February. As he could only be with us for an hour that evening he took the stage first, and soon had the crowd's full attention with his first number ‘Beira do Mar'. He writes and sings in his native Portuguese and has got that laid back jazz-influenced pop style down to a fine art! Since this performance he has secured two five-night residencies at the Tantric Jazz Café downtown. The second song ‘Eu Vou Cantar' he introduces himself on the recording, have a listen…

Martin Maidment

Martin is a well known musician in Bristol , being both drummer and guitarist and having played with Copter and Radon Daughters in the past. He currently leads the band Gagarin, and is the drummer in Dalmaine to boot. This performance was very memorable as Martin really created some emotional tension with this song - later in the set he commented, ‘like most of my material this next song is about sex, death, and science'… see, it's obvious when you listen… isn't it?

Ian Sills

We were glad to welcome poet Ian back to Salt in March, having met him in February along with some friends from Acoustic Night and the local poetry / performance scene. Spoilt for choice which of his five poems to include, as all of his material has been funny, poignant, inventive – and at its best performed rather than written down, as this poem elucidates…

Mark Pendered Mark Pendered - Salt Open Micthis was also from June 03 when mark adapted a song he had previously written about somebody going away for a while. Mark is one of the co-leaders of Salt and often plays on the night itself, either covers or some of his own thought-provoking songs. i'm not going to over-do the flattery here though.. see what you think...
Jon Rees Jon Rees - Salt Open Micat the time we knew him as 'jon quiet', because jon led a band called 'The Quiet' who have sadly disbanded and were quite exceptional, in the vein of emotionally fragile/beautiful acoustic pop. (<- i will get lynched for applying this tag)... still, we at salt were fortunate in that jon was the lead singer/songwriter and continued to play for us, here in August 03 with his former drummer James on congas. this song stirs up all kind of mental pictures for me... you?
Frank Chlebko Frank Chlebko - Salt Open Micfrank is a friend of ours and somebody whose gift for singing and playing guitar had gone dormant for a while, until he emerged one night and played three absolute gems from his own back catalogue. see what you think of this closing number, which (I think) is about Jesus, and which shows his distinctive style...
"salt is... [spoken]" - jacqui chan Jacqui Chan - Salt Open MicJacqui is the girl who got Salt happening in the first place. She lives in Toulouse now so her last Salt event, in June 03, was a bit poignant for us all. Here she is introducing the evening - this kind of sums up what Salt's about so here it is in her own words..
